STUNG TRENG: A team from the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute of the Fisheries Administration inspected and prepared a location to tag and release 100 endangered fish with GPS tracking devices.
The action to protect endangered wildlife in Cambodia was made possible by Heng Kong, Director of Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute, together with the Mekong River Miracle Project Officer, FishBio consulting company and members of the Koh Preah Fishing Community.
On May 15, 2023, 100 endangered fish were tagged and released in Koh Preah village including: four large carp weighing 68 kg, 26 small carp weighing between 1.5-3 kg and 70 large trout weighing between 2-3.5 kg.
Cambodia has some of the largest and smallest fish in the world, including carp which range from 2.5cm long to over two meters, and the Mekong catfish, which can measure three meters long and weigh more than 300kg. A four meter long trout weighing more than 150 kilograms has also been caught in Cambodia. Cambodian waters are rich in fishing resources and the country produces more than 60,000 tons of fish per year.
